Janet Brace - Skylark 1956

Blonde, West Virginia native, Janet Brace, (born Margaret Brace in 1927-1991?) who arrived in New York in 1948 and initially sang with the bands of Vincent Lopez and Johnny Long, with whom she recorded and appeared on the radio with in 1949. She subsequently became well known as a jazz vocalist in appearances at venues such as the Village Vanguard and the Blue Angel, working in a jazz idiom. She married drummer Don MacLean, who played with the Don Elliott Quartet, and had 2 children.

Her one album, in 1956 for ABC-Paramount came and went pretty much without notice. But a few years earlier she made a small mark in the Great American Songbook when she was the first singer to record “Teach Me Tonight.” It was not successful for her and it was not until a couple of years later that it became a hit for anyone else.
She said rock and roll killed her career. She moved to Florida and she and Don raised their children there. She was widowed early and retired in Costa Rica.
Janet Brace died in either Florida or Costa Rica ( depending on which article you read ).
